REVIEW: Firegarden - 2164 Self-financed, 2004
6.5/10
Firegarden - 2164 - cover art Do you think that modern rock is too modern? Do you think that Rainbow and Deep Purple beat the hell out of The Darkness and Marilyn Manson? Well, then listening to this self-financed album from UK's own Firegarden might be a welcome break from commercial sounds of today. They open up head on with a party rock introduction called "Last Words". Fast and well executed guitar solos are always present, adding something extra to the otherwise rather traditional and straight-forward song writing. There is a time when even retro becomes old but it is up to the beholder to decide when that point has been reached. Firegarden do have plenty of potential but unfortunately I think they are on the wrong side of the 80s for the major record companies to pay them any attention today. Those people who still appreciate good music no matter from what time period we're dealing will surely not agree. I would personally have appreciated a few bolder moves and unorthodox ideas but they are good at what they do, no doubt about that. I also have a slight problem with the vocalist James Jeffery who doesn't have that power and fiery glow in his voice which I think is necessary for this kind of music. With a stronger singer and suitable studio budget Firegarden would win me over I think. Favorite picks: "Last Words", "Sleepless".
