Fission is a band that I have been curious about ever since I first read about it in Vintersorg interviews. It was created by Vintersorg's live drummer Benny Hägglund in 2002 and only consists of him and Vintersorg himself, two talented multi-instrumentalists who have worked together for several years now. Lyrically Fission reminds a lot of the mysterious scientific lyrics of Vintersorg but musically it is far removed from their progressive blend of extreme metal and more classic rock tunes. This project is more straight-forward death / thrash metal rooted in the well respected Swedish tradition but with the two individuals' own personal touches. Without imitating himself from his other bands, Vintersorg handle both growling and clean vocals with ease in a way that has never been heard from him before. From time to time the music come off as a little stiff, probably due to the fact that there are only two members in the band, but mostly they manage to keep up the pace and energy needed to make an album like this enjoyable. A track like "Accelarator" shows remarkable skills in mixing aggression, melody and atmosphere into something much more interesting than what most At The Gates worshipping bands are capable of. "Crater" is an album which sounds strangely familiar and fresh at the same time and I definitely recommend it to all fans of modern death / thrash metal who don't mind a few odd twists and turns now and then.
