The place? Los Angeles, California. The band? Flatline. The album? Pave the Way (digitally released in mid-2008 but out in early 2009 on CD). And the sound? High powered and energetic neo-Thrash, though the band claims to be simply "Metal," which is certainly suitable enough. Raison d'être? To make heads bang. Are they (or will they be) successful? One cannot help but think so, though ultimately only time will tell.
Sonically theirs is a potent blend of familiar parts, and the band most pointedly worships at the altar of Pantera. No one person can realistically sound like Dimebag, but the spirit, passion, and quite a bit of talent is present here. Vocally, Phil Anselmo is recalled, but only one dimensionally. More apparent in Flatline's overall sound is early Machine Head and Pissing Razors (the 2002 version with Jason Bragg on lead throat). Touches of Hatebreed (particularly on "Nefarious"), Lamb of God (especially on "The Passing"), and Slayer (see "Deleted") also present themselves throughout Pave the Way, so if these bands are of interest, check out Flatline.
Back to that talent, plenty is on display in the album's 41 minutes. The bass audibly pulses and grooves fiercely, the drums pound and pummel with abandon, and those guitars are everywhere, playing all styles well. Looking for standout tracks? Along with the aforementioned ones try out "Generations Fall" and "Dying Breed," although the album as a whole is solid. "God As My Witness" offers a change of pace and some truly beautiful guitar work, though it sounds a tad dated - perhaps even cliché - in 2009. If Flatline can harness the mastery of their guitar players and offer a touch more originality, they can really go places. As it stands now, Pave the Way is a great starting point. Besides, originality may just be overrated.
