REVIEW: Flesh & Dust - Dark Season self-released, 2009
7.5/10
Flesh & Dust - Dark Season - cover art Well, here’s something you don’t see everyday. Along comes a foray into the leisurely worlds of stoner metal and Southern rock... from France! Such anomalies can go either way and I’ve heard more than enough of them that belly-flop in a hee-la-ree-uss manner, but I’m always eager to check out the next band willing to take such risks. And thus, Flesh & Dust provides enough smart riffs, thrilling lead breaks and latent rock anthems over the course of five tracks to surprise and delight the listener. One definitely hears Clutch, Down, COC, Soundgarden and the best elements of Metallica’s Load albums (yes, there are some) catalogued and referenced behind a rather pitiably one-note hardcorish vocal bark. Not awful, per se, but more variation is welcome. So, too, would be some improvement in the enunciation department, as the tranformation from “Miss Failure” into something that sounds more like “misfire” makes for requisite smirking. Or maybe they were just angling for some classic double entendre? Sacrebleu! In any event, I’m definitely looking to hear whether this band has the stones to graduate from the short-form EP to a debut full-length, and whether the international fanbase of all things harmonically pinched will take these Parisians to heart as they oughta.
