Fleurety is a Norwegian band which released in 1995 their debut album called “Min Tid Skal Komme”. It was a piece of fantastic black metal album spiced with hazy, dark progressive music, embodied in a harsh sound, frantic shrieks and eerie dreamy female vocals. “Department Of Apocalyptic Affairs” is their second full-length album. In between they recorded the “Last Minute Lies” MCD which I won´t tell about since I haven´t had the chance of hearing it. Does the style have changed? The answer is pretty clear and loud: YES. In fact this one hasn´t nothing to do with the debut. As if the albums would have been released by different bands! Now the style is more avantgarde and bold, daring until the point of including several passages with electronic beats courtesy of Tore Ylvisaker from Ulver, clean voices instead of black metal shrieks, and an overall dissonance built by guitars and synthesizers which makes this album hard, really hard, to digest. Melodies are annoying and nonsense; even though one must admit they succeed in creating powerful disturbing ambiences, that´s not enough to categorise this album as good, sorry. The songs seem to roam in a maremagnum of techno beats, dull melodies and absurd movements.
As a detail, for this album the Fleurety duo has been accompanied by well known stars as Hellhammer, Carl Michael Eide or Beyond Dawn´s drummer Einar Sjursø. Sometimes the most creative bands moan about the lack of comprehension they suffer from the metal scene, and certainly we´re often damned anti-evolution rednecks when it comes to certain styles or attitudes. However, when some of these bands suddenly change the style of the music and are able to perform black metal the same way as they can release a piece of electronic crap or dirty cheap pop albums, the musicians feel shocked because of the reaction of fans. Take Ulver, for example... Well, it comes like this: you the bands have the right to play whatever you like, we the fans and journalists have the right to whiplash an album if we consider it to be pretentious junk. That´s all I´ve got to say.
