Flotsam and Jetsam will forever be known as the former band of one Jason Newsted. Period. End of list. They may have put out some solid Thrash albums after the departure of the recently minted Jasonic but the fanfare surrounding this band will always be about who used to be in it, which is a disservice to F&J, purveyors of the same brand of old school Thrash as Metal Church. In fact, one of the selling points for this DVD reads "former band of Jason Newsted, former bass player of Metallica." Wow. Reeks of cashing in, huh?
All that aside, this DVD offers little of real value to those other than diehard fans, especially in this age of DVDs chock full of bonus features, etc. Perhaps necessarily minimalist in approach there are 8 live songs here and a video for "Straight to Hell," which is off the band's 2004 album Dreams of Death. Oh, and there's a television spot for the same recent album also out on Crash Music, Inc. If you are a Flots completist, you will buy this. If you are a passing fan this may be hit or miss. Still, for the uninitiated Live in Japan offers a nice sampling of a band that showed a lot of promise early in their career and a few missteps aside, are still soldiering on now. If only they could've gotten the rest of the concert bill featuring Overkill and Death Angel together with F&J on one DVD. That would've banged the head that does not bang.... What is here is good, there just should have been more.
Bonus round: look for Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth (from Overkill, you dolt!) standing off to the side of the stage perhaps showing appreciation.
