REVIEW: Fony - Routine Irregular Casket Music, 2002
6/10
Fony - Routine Irregular - cover art According to the label Fony have been compared with bands like Tool, Soundgarden and Jane's Addiction which made me understand right away that this would not be the album of the year in my book. I was in for a little surprise though since this debut release from the band isn't bad at all. Fony is a rather young band that was formed in Surrey, Great Britain, in 1999 and now they have signed with the Copro Records sublabel Casket Music. Even though I said a few lines above that this album isn't bad at all I must say that this isn't exactly a top list album for me. It is when the band indulge in more aggressive vocals and razor-sharp riffs that they sound their best such as on the second track "Nervegas Breakdown" and occasionally in most of the other tracks. I am not very fond of their slower sections where the singer tries to use a "clean" voice and sounds almost as bad as most other nu-metal wannabe bands that the world is so full of today. Fony have introduced us to their sound for the very first time and their debut release is a solid one that should appeal to fans of modern heavy rock / metal. It doesn't do very much for me but I must say it is highly enjoyable at times.
