REVIEW: Forefather - Ours Is The Kingdom Karmageddon Media, 2004
7.5/10
Forefather - Ours Is The Kingdom - cover art The British band Forefather apparently dislike being referred to as a black metal band but that is still what I am going to do now. These pagan warriors dedicate their instrumental skills to the ancient warriors of the past Anglo-Saxia. Having issued three albums on their own label Angelisc Enterprises before they have now signed a union with the Dutch metal specialists Karmageddon Media in order to be able to bring their music out to the masses in a more appropriate manner in the future. "Ours is The Kingdom" show a definite black metal vibe but on top of this there are references to death metal, thrash metal and even folk music. The guitar riffs and melodies often bring Dissection to mind and the vocals remind me of Ancient Rites although rawer and more primal in their nature. The lives and spirits of our ancestors are long since gone but Forefather honor them in a most respectable fashion. Raspy black-ish growling is often interrupted by a clean semi-dramatic voice which is more or less characteristic for the viking metal genre. Intense, fierce, melodic, powerful and epic are keywords when talking about Forefather. This is an album that may suite fans of Falkenbach, Manowar, Ancient Rites or Einherjer but "Ours Is The Kingdom" sound like neither nor all of them. The negative side of it is that they tend to get a little repetitive from time to time (which is hard not to when releasing an hour plus album) but Forefather is definitely one of the more unique and intriguing acts in the viking metal genre.
