The Spanish band Forever Slave was created in the year 2000 by the duo of Lady Angellyca and Servalath, Lady Angellyca having a past as an art student and vocalist of various local acts. Not surprisingly they play a lot on gothic romanticism and the beauty of their front woman which will surely make many young boys leave a trace of saliva behind them. Musically their debut album is not exactly surprising either. It's constructed pretty much in an identical way as most other modern gothic metal bands with mid-paced guitar riffs and symphonic keyboard arrangements acting more or less as a background to the vocals. Both the emotional soprano vocals of Lady Angellyca and the growling from drummer boy Eduardo are on a high level but do not quite reach world class qualities. Even though there are a few decent guitar solos to be found on this album, something that few gothic metal bands can display, the song writing focuses on creating an atmosphere instead of overpowering the listener with complex guitar work or other individual escapades. Piano melodies and the use of a violinist add further to the rich texture of Forever Slave's musical compositions.
Lyrically "Alice's Inferno" tells the story of a teenager who was sent to a lunatic asylum after having been accused of killing her parents. Memories are lost and in the quest for truth she travels through her subconscious mind where there is both darkness and love to be found. Concept albums are almost always interesting and the young Spanish band have succeeded well with their literary experiment. There are far too few bands who have anything interesting to say with their lyrics today and therefore I appreciate their attempt at making an album that can offer a more complete package to the mind and soul of the listener. Fans of Sins Of Thy Beloved, Trail Of Tears and After Forever should appreciate Forever Slave as well. A good start indeed but they need to work some more on solidifying their own personal sound.
