REVIEW: Forgotten Suns - Innergy ProgRock, 2009
8/10
Forgotten Suns - Innergy - cover art Clunky title notwithstanding (enough with the puns, folks!), this is an otherwise sure-footed record by a long, long, long-standing Portuguese entity (formed in 1991), its third album on as many labels. One would imagine that a newfound partnership with the consistently excellent ProgRock Records will yield mutual rewards for both parties. Anyhow, the record. Dynamic, modern-leaning progressive metal, long on dexterity and short on wank, with an emphasis on aggressive drumming rarely heard in this neck of the woods. I mean, “Racing the Hours” is approximately thrash in select moments and the cymbal crashes that highlight the ten-minute “News” deserve praise in and of themselves. If the guitar riffs tip their hat to palm-muted nu-metal on more than one occasion, who cares? They’re surrounded by exciting keyboard runs and synth washes, thoughtful lyrics and a singer who knows exactly what the hell he’s doing, even when he’s rapping (well, what else would you call that syncopated bit on “Flashback”?). Mature without being stodgy, self-produced fairly well and sequenced like a champ, this one would impress diehard fans of Marillion, Pain of Salvation and Alder-era Fates Warning. Best of all: Innergy gets better the more you play it. At least I think so.
