REVIEW: Forgotten Tomb - Springtime Depression Adipocere Records, 2003
6.5/10
Forgotten Tomb - Springtime Depression - cover art Forgotten Tomb is a band from northern Italy that formed in March 1999 by band leader Herr Morbid and his companion Torment. Herr Morbid also runs the zine Solitude Aeternus which has nothing to do with the music of the American band. Being one of the first signings to the controversial Swedish label Selbstmord Services they are doing their best to promote suicide and self-destruction with their music. Similar to the avantgarde black metal of bands like Burzum and Shining this album also show doomier influences that make me think of early Katatonia. Especially the vocals share the anguish that Katatonia used to distribute through their first couple of releases but Forgotten Tomb don't reach the same heights. The music is cold and melancholic, perhaps the perfect setting for the ending of a life? If you want to wallow in your own misery and focus on pain and suffering for a while then Forgotten Tomb is the soundtrack for you. Some may find it tasteless, some shocking, some couldn't care less while yet some people will probably find something in the music that makes them feel themselves as being part of it. I simply fail to see the point of it. Why put a lot of work into promoting suicide in a serious manner instead of just ending it all right there and then? If you do it to shock the world then it's nothing new but if you want to transform all your hatred and misery onto other people it just seems pathetic to me. Anyway, this album comes with a powerful and massive production thanks to the Abyss Studios where Tommy Tägtgren handled the recordings with his talented ears in the absence of his more well-known brother. The second album from Forgotten Tomb is an interesting experience and mostly enjoyable but sometimes it gets a little bit slow and monotonous. It will appeal to fans of extreme doom metal and misanthropic black metal in the Burzum vein who don't fear a modern production. If you liked their debut release you will not be disappointed this time either.
