REVIEW: Forsaken - Iconoclast Golden Lake Productions, 2003
6.5/10
Forsaken - Iconoclast - cover art Forsaken is one of the oldest metal bands from Malta. The band was formed in September 1990 under the name Blind Alley but they soon changed their name to Forsaken. In January 2001 their guitarist Daniel Magri died from cancer but this didn't stop them from continuing as a band. Now they are releasing a new mini album through the small Scottish label Golden Lake Productions. "Iconoclast" features four tracks that the band recorded at Temple Studios in Mistra Bay on Malta. The production is not entirely perfect but its quality does nothing to disturb the listener. What we have here is basically a mix of doom and epic heavy metal with melancholic melodies, clean vocals (both male and female) but also some growls and screams. The clean male vocals are somewhat dramatic and theatrical and remind me a little of the apocalyptic Christian metal band Savior Machine. Both the male vocalist Leo Stivala (who is also an original member) and the female guest vocalist Rachel Grech are doing their jobs very well but unfortunately the band fail to accompany the vocals with the appropriate music. The song writing is the weakest aspect of this album but if you enjoy atmospheric and doomy metal you might want to give these Maltese veterans a chance because they have been around for a long time now.
