REVIEW: Frantic Bleep - The Sense Apparatus Elitist Records, 2005
6.5/10
Frantic Bleep - The Sense Apparatus - cover art With a band name like Frantic Bleep you probably realize that this is not easy music. Frantic Bleep is a Norwegian act that was created in the year 2001 and now features former Madder Mortem bassist Pål Mozart Bjørke. There seems to be an inflation when it comes to difficult and avantgarde metal bands right now. As soon as you mention progressive or experimental when describing a band then they immediately become interesting to a certain group of people. I must admit that I can be included in that category but I also admit that there is a great chance of disappointment when it comes to this kind of bands. The debut album from Frantic Bleep is a very frantic album indeed but the band never loses focus and lets the chaos rule completely. They control the music and the experimental song writing, despite being rather unconventional, does never get out of hand even though it is taken to extremes on occasion.

It is impossible to describe this album so that you will know what it sounds like because Frantic Bleep is not easily put into a certain genre. There are influences from many diverse styles of music found here - everything from pop to modern rock, progressive metal á la Spiral Architect and extreme yet experimental metal in the Arcturus vein. A little of Antimatter and Madder Mortem can be traced here and there as well. The dismal tune "Curtainraiser", which is my favorite track, sounds like a modernized version of My Dying Bride. Frantic Bleep should be a band to keep track of in the future but except for this song they do not really get to me. The emo rock cloud that hangs over their music is a bit too thick for my taste but they are talented musicians, no doubt about that. They should find themselves a new vocalist though as Pål Mozart Bjørke does not impress enough despite his wide range. A decent start for an interesting band.
