REVIEW: Freedom Call - Crystal Empire Steamhammer Records, 2001
9/10
Freedom Call - Crystal Empire - cover art Freedom Call have very quickly risen to the top of the European power metal scene and with this new release they maintain their position. There is no doubt that Germany is the Mecca of power metal and bands like Silent Force, Helloween, Running Wild and Gamma Ray have all become very successful. Freedom Call is a band worth mentioning together with these bands because they are one of few European power metal bands who manage to make great music without sounding foolish like so many other bands tend to do today. Except for the track "Ocean" this is one of the best power metal releases of 2001 and Freedom Call balances the dreamy Helloween concept well with traditional metal riffs. The best tracks on the album, "Freedom Call", "The Quest" and "Pharao", are in fact some of the best metal songs of the year. Perhaps they get a little too cheesy and monotonous sometimes but all in all this is a great album that fans of power metal will easily embrace with open arms (it's rather hard to embrace something with your arms closed I think...).
