REVIEW: Freedom Call - Eternity Steamhammer Records, 2002
7.5/10
Freedom Call - Eternity - cover art I was breathtakingly impressed by the last album from the German band Freedom Call entitled "Crystal Empire". Wonderful melodies, powerful keyboard arrangements and amazing choruses made them one of my favorite bands right away. As you may realize my expectations were set very high when this album arrived a few days ago and I was of course disappointed which is what happens when your expectations are set too high. This album is by no means a bad one, in fact it is much better than what most other power metal bands deliver these days but I was still hoping for more after the amazing last album. As always there are some nice melodies and nice choruses to be enjoyed on this album as well but I miss those killer tracks that could be found on the last one. Every power metal trademark can be found though - impressive guitar playing, high-pitched lead vocals, powerful choruses and pounding drums. This time you will also get the chance to hear backing vocals from Tobias Sammet (Edguy) and Oliver Hartmann (At Vance). I just wish that they could let their creative minds flow the way they did a year ago but I am confident that we will see Freedom Call in their prime very soon again. Even though this was not what I had hoped for it is a high quality power metal release that should please most fans of up-beat rhythms. Stand-out tracks: "Bleeding Heart", "Turn Back Time", two tracks that still show the best of what Freedom Call is capable of.
