REVIEW: Freedom Call - Live Invasion Steamhammer Records, 2004
8.5/10
Freedom Call - Live Invasion - cover art Freedom Call have quickly risen to become one of the leading power metal bands in Europe, following in the footsteps of fellow countrymen Helloween. It is not common practice to release a live album after only three studio offerings but I am glad that Steamhammer Records made an exception for this quite amazing band. Many live albums have been ruined because of the production job in the studio afterwards where much or all of the live atmosphere have been removed. This is not the case with this album though. Freedom Call's producer team of Charlie Bauerfeind, Alex Kalb and Wolfgang Eller have done a wonderful job at keeping the live feeling of the recording without losing much of the clean sound of a studio album. The first disc of this double album consists of thirteen tracks from the first part of their "Eternal World Tour" in April and May 2002 in the German cities of Düsseldorf, Munich and Stuttgart. The live tracks have been chosen well with some of my favorite Freedom Call songs being "Freedom Call", "The Quest" and "Heart Of The Rainbow". Unfortunately they have left out the very powerful "Pharao" for some reason. This is a well balanced live album that should not only be of interest to big fans of the band but also those who would like to have an introduction to what Freedom Call is all about as the sound quality of this recording is pretty much the same as that of a real studio album. As a bonus a second disc has been included which consists of the "Taragon" EP from 1999 which has until now only been released in France. The German masters of power metal successfully defend their status as one of the leading bands in the genre today and "Live Invasion" is one of the most impressive live albums I've heard (you should know that I am generally not a big fan of live albums). If you're not allergic to happy metal than this is definitely worth checking out.
