REVIEW: Freternia - A Nightmare Story Arise Records, 2002
7.5/10
Freternia - A Nightmare Story - cover art Freternia is one of the bands who belong to the Borås based Swedish power metal band who have traded members with each other during the years, the others being Ironware, Conviction, Crystal Eyes and Zonata. Some people like corn and other people like power metal. I have never restricted myself to a particular genre when it comes to music but I must admit that I have come to grow very tired of the never ending stream of power metal bands during the last decade, one being more stereotypical and pathetic than the other. Fortunately there are still some new bands who manage to create good power metal and Freternia is one of them. I first heard a song from them on a compilation album from the label Loud 'n' Proud Records who released their debut album and also had its base outside my home town. Now that their second album is being released on the Spanish label Arise Records I was eager to know what the new material sounded like. I didn't really hope for that much since they are still a very young band but I was surprised by the quality and maturity shown on this album. What takes most bands ten years to accomplish they have done in only a few. The music has more tempo changes and is more varied than what we are used to hear from most of their competition on the power metal scene. They use heavy riffs, they have several great songs, the vocalist is doing his job really well even though his voice is a little weak and they manage to create the perfect balance between keyboards and guitars. Their lyrics are rather boring of course but the only thing that I care about is the music. Freternia is certainly one of the most promising new bands of Swedish power metal. Stand-out tracks: "Grimbor The Great", "Arrival", "Shadowdancers".
