REVIEW: Freund Hein - Subversive Revolution Self-financed, 2001
6.5/10
Freund Hein - Subversive Revolution - cover art Freund Hein is an Austrian band that was born in 1994 by three 16-17 year old boys who wanted to play the music they liked together. "Subversive Revolution" is a mini album financed by the band themselves but it is more than just a simple demo. The production is rock solid and crystal clear and the cover art and layout is very professional as well. This shows that they are serious about what they do and so does the music. It is almost impossible for me to tell you what this sounds like since Freund Hein is a very strange band, strange in the way that they don't sound like any other bands I've heard. There are black metal riffing and screams, death metal influences, there are acoustic sections, progressive keyboard arrangements and dark clean vocals which sometimes gives their music a slightly gothic touch. The thread that ties all these five songs together is however that all of them are very melodic even if they are not easy to grasp since the song structures are highly unusual and sometimes rather complex. I definitely think the band should continue down this road because they have developed an interesting concept and if they work hard it should be a record contract coming their way sooner or later. "Subversive RevolutioN" is in short a decent release from one of those bands you need to hear before knowing whether it's something for you or not.
