REVIEW: Frightmare - Midnight Murder Mania Razorback Records, 2003
6.5/10
Frightmare - Midnight Murder Mania - cover art From Razorback Records, the home of horror movie metal, comes the debut album of Portland, Oregon's Frightmare. This band is quite young and is the brainchild of Neil Smith (Maniac Killer, Lord Gore) but is also supposed to feature members from Engorged. Not surprisingly this resembles both Engorged and Lord Gore with intense grinding death metal and a thick atmosphere. Starting out with a wonderful horror movie intro we are taken back in time to the good old days when horror movies were not all about Scream sequels but blood and gore. Fans of bands like Terrorizer, Repulsion, Napalm Death, Carcass and Macabre will be happy while listening to this album because these are some of the places where Frightmare have found their inspiration but they are also big fans of The Misfits and other such non-metal acts which also shines through, albeit not as clearly. Lyrically it is easier to see the sources of inspiration since every single track is about gory 80s horror movies. The cover art I must say is unusual and colorful but I am personally not a big fan of adult comics. Well-played, diverse and tight but nothing that we haven't heard before.
