REVIEW: Frost - Extreme Loneliness-Fragments Paragon Records, 2005
8/10
Frost - Extreme Loneliness-Fragments - cover art The nationality of a band is always an interesting fact and always contributes to the overall impression of the music, and this is especially true of black metal. No matter if there actually is a difference in sound, a listener will reflect and say to himself, “well it makes sense that these guys are from…” (or at least I do). And this has certainly been the case with Hungary’s Frost, a traditional black metal band with a sound similar to early “medieval” Satyricon. The bleak atmosphere, black metal screeches and riffing are present, as well as synth melodies and songs that alternate between aggressive and melodic sections. As can be said for most recent releases in the genre, Frost have very little in the way of originality and innovation. That does not mean that the song writing is not superb, nor that the execution and performance are flawed in any way, only that there is nothing here that any black metal fan hasn’t heard before (and nothing that any black metal fan does not passionately crave). Songs of pagan rituals, apocalyptic visions, and winter nights in snow-covered forests are to be found, along with a curious number called “My Black Metal.” The song could be taken as a response to those who feel that traditional black metal has “run its course,” and that nothing can be gained by continuing to produce music in this style. It describes the singer’s first encounter with black metal and the effect that it had on him:

“Unholy dark vigors moved into my childish soul that time, In that winter, that black winter day. Metal thorns wounded my body and threw me towards the Sad gray sky to introduce me, the new son of night who will Be immortal with the night. This is my black metal Deep inside my heart.”

I could not agree more with this sentiment, and I suspect it is the relationship that all true fans of the genre have known.
