Fueled by Fire's debut, Spread the Fire, is most evocative of pre-comeback Exodus (particularly the Steve Souza-instant recall) and Anthrax, while also invoking the debut releases from Testament, Slayer, and Metallica. As one song says, "Thrash is Back." Just check the lyrics from said track for inspiration and maybe plagiarism (or izzat tribute?): "Bang your head against the stage, on Baloff's command." That kinda says it all, huh? Vocally and lyrically -- aw, hell, why be limiting? The whole package has old school Thrash written on it, right down to the photo collage in the CD booklet, as well as the logo, art, and everything else. StF very much sounds like it could've been released in 1987, which isn't a bad thing when the passion with which it is executed is so high.
Not unlike some other noteworthy "retro" Thrash records from anno 2007, StF is necessarily a derivative affair. However, it does have a very high fun factor and while the music plays out well, the self-production suffers a bit. This is particularly apparent in the clunky-sounding kick drums and vocals. Also, the guitars are somewhat thin sounding at times. But these guys are obviously fans of the denim-and-leather phase of Metal and probably have patches stitched on anything they can get their hands on, really. Metal Blade Records has re-released the 2006 self-released album with a pair of bonus tracks that simply offer more of the same. Worth noting is that Joey Vera of Armored Saint and Fates Warning mixed and mastered this version. "Metal Forever" is a fun song, if only for the name-checking that occurs within the lyrics. Cheesy, yes, but in a good way. Whereas current era Exodus only practices "violent fun," Fueled by Fire brings the "good friendly" portion.
