REVIEW: Funeral - In Fields Of Pestilent Grief Nocturnal Music, 2002
7/10
Funeral - In Fields Of Pestilent Grief - cover art Sadness and grief are emotions which are perhaps best musically manifested through the genre known as doom metal and they are emotions that Funeral have come very close to themselves lately. This due to the tragic death of their bass player Einar Fredriksen on the 10th of January this year (2003). Whether the band have planned to continue after this is unknown to me but I think Einar would have wanted them to. Time will tell. Funeral are veterans on the Norwegian metal scene but have been living a life in the underground all along since their creation in 1991 and this is only their second album so far. Their debut album was released in 1997 and many things have happened since then. The band now features a new female vocalist Hanne Hukkelberg who brings new fresh blood and power into the band, being the third female vocalist spending time in the band. Her way of singing is rather dark, passionate, creative and classically inspired. In a way I now think of Funeral as the Autumn Tears of doom metal. Musically Funeral have been heavily influenced by My Dying Bride, something that is not very well disguised on this album. The main difference is of course that Funeral have a female vocalist who is doing a magnificent job. In fact she has one of the finest voices I have ever heard in metal and I hope this is not the last we hear from her. Funeral is not the first band to have found their way to the Italian label Nocturnal Music as the debut mcd from The Sins Of Thy Beloved ("All Alone") was released on the label in 1997. When Funeral released their first album they also had a male growler but now it is all about clean female vocals and slow, dismal melodies, not as slow as before but not leaving the genre behind either. Funeral still has a step to climb from good to great but if doom metal with female vocals sound like something you would be interested in you should check out this album.
