With the constant avalanche of trends in metal, over produced releases and that new generation of short hair, skater –like looking “metalheads” with their jumpy shit and fucking gay influence in metal (I just had to take it out of my system), it feels extremely good to see and listen to a band that sticks to the basics of metal to remind this trend saturated scene where metal comes from, and this is just exactly what Canadian Funeral Fog does with Under The Black Veil, a minimalist offering of pure old school grim Black Metal fueled with misanthropy, hate and desolation. The music is not pretentious, super intertwined with musical complexities nor majestic, the production not the best but albeit basic, raw and not the most original thing out there, it excels when placing feeling, emotions and atmospheres into it transporting your mind to gloomy landscapes and worlds where darkness embraces you under its black veil. By covering Burzum on track number seven, Ea, Lord of the Depths, the band makes evident the grim influence in them and the impact bands such as Dark Throne, Mayhem, and the aforementioned might have had in their music and although you can feel the weight of such influences I also find many passages reminiscent of Black Crucifixion and Mystifier in it. With all this said, if you are into grim and raw Black Metal Funeral Fog are worth a try.
