REVIEW: Funeral For A Friend - Between Order And Model (EP) Mighty Atom Records, 2002
6.5/10
Funeral For A Friend - Between Order And Model (EP) - cover art In December 2001 the Welsh band January Thirst threw in the towel but at the same time a new band was born namely Funeral For A Friend. They signed a deal with Mighty Atom Records and here we have the first musical result on disc. These guys have found a rather untraditional sound with a mixture of hardcore screams, emotional heavy rock and even some mighty death / thrash riffing that can be heard on the opening track "10:45 Amsterdam Conversations". This is like At The Gates meets Linkin Park which might at first seem like a weird combination but they actually manage to make it work rather well at times. The vocals are mostly melancholic clean rock vocals coupled with hardcore screams. This is actually a very interesting album but I'm afraid the guys will have some troubles convincing a wider audience since they are too noisy for fans of modern rock and too soft and trendy for fans of death / thrash metal. They will however surely appeal to more open-minded people which is a good thing in my opinion. Enjoyable music, good vocals but a little uneven and unstructured. Funeral For A Friend is a young band that we will hopefully hear more from in the future. Stand-out tracks: "10:45 Amsterdam Conversations", "The Art Of American Football".
