What's going to be one of the best melodic death metal releases this year was released recently. It's the debut album from an unsigned band from California that far surpasses most of the newer Scandinavian acts. The Funeral Pyre, a six-member death/black metal force completed work on "Immersed by the Flames of Mankind," the CD in question. Bottom line is that if you like the more melodic forms of death and/or black metal, you need to go check these guys out, buy a CD, call Century Media, Metal Blade, or any other respectable label and ask them why The Funeral Pyre isn't on their roster. The simplest description I can come up with is The Forsaken meets Graveworm but that doesn't totally sum up their sound. They may not be reinventing the wheel here, but top-notch songwriting and musicianship are displayed in mass quantities. Basically imagine the best qualities of melodic death and black metal blended seamlessly in an epic and overpowering display of musicianship.
"Immersed by the Flames of Mankind" is easily the best debut album I've heard since "A Celebration Of Guilt" by Arsis, another band proving that not all new American metal bands are hardcore kids playing sloppy In Flames riffs. Impressive, to say the least.
