REVIEW: Funeris Nocturnum - From The Aspect Of Darkly Illuminated Woodcut Records, 2001
7.5/10
Funeris Nocturnum - From The Aspect Of Darkly Illuminated - cover art Funeris Nocturnum was formed around 1998 by vocalist Trmt.xes and the now departed guitarist, Grimort. Hailing from Finland, Funeris Nocturnum certainly has developed a much different sound than any of their Scandanavian neighbors; taking black metal and combining it with elements of thrash metal yet still laced with melodic undertones. While undergoing the hardship of numerous member changes the band has certainly matured technically since releasing their first demo in 1999. “From the Aspect of Darkly Illuminated” is the bands second full studio album but seems to be much more fluid while also being more experimental than the previous released “Pure Satanic Blasphemy”. With a noticeably stronger guitar package at bay, the songs all maintain an increasingly fast pace throughout the album with very technical riffing and even some clean guitar work, specifically at the end of the album’s title track. Trmt.xes’s vocals are one of the significant highlights of this album as he conquers a wide range of vocals on each song while not tracking his voice repeatedly. Equally impressive is the keyboardist Ruho. He works very well as a layer to the music, never overbearing but always adding. The band does a good share of mixing it up with the very chilling, fully instrumental synth track “Nameless” and the catchier, head banging track “I Abhor Thee”. The album, while having a good mix, does get repetitious at some points and also seems to be almost too sporadic at other points. I do feel this album is an overall improvement for Funeris Nocturnum, but I also feel that they are capable of much more as a band. With the incarnation of the band still only a few years old I think that the band will continue to grow with each release and is definitely a band to watch as I expect to see and hear a lot about them in the future. Key tracks: The Betrayal, The Betrayed and an act of Blasphemy, From the Aspect of Darkly Illuminated, Nameless and Profane Angel.
