REVIEW: Funny Money - Stick It! Fizz Donkey/Perris Records, 2007
6.5/10
Funny Money - Stick It! - cover art The newest offering from Baltimorian Steve Whiteman and his cohorts is an awe inspiring testament to the tenacity of their vision. Whiteman has been a fixture in the hard rock scene for nearly the last 30 years, beginning in the late 70's with The Shooze. Then onto Kix which were one of the more shamefully underrated of the whole 80's metal/rock crop. Kix were one of the best and they knew how to put on a show. When that folded in the late 90's, the skinny blonde man wasted no time forming a new vehicle. Funny Money sounds essentially like his previous band... with a little more AC/DC swagger and a little more Cheap Trick popishness. But if you liked Kix then there is no reason you shouldn't like this band.

Stick It starts with the tune "By The Balls" a playful ode to women and what they do to the fellers... which features a trademark Whiteman talk interlude... the next few tracks follow the same safe formula... a nice riff... some killer bass gallop... Steve singing about girls, doing it, girls and, um... I think, doing it again. "Slow To Blow" with its embarassing "I was a man on a mission in the missionary position" line. Then we have "Nowhere At All" which starts out with a killer groove and vocals remniscient of Alice Cooper, then takes a dive with an odd steel drum/calypso break in the middle. "A Thousand Thank Yous" is a sweet little number thanking the fans.

Producer Beau Hill does a wonderful job here, the sound is clear and sounds like the days of old (Hill was hair metal producer golden boy for a while helming the boards for bands like Winger, Fiona, Kix, Warrant, Ratt and more). He really captured the party band vibe of the band.

I'm not saying this is a bad effort, quite the contrary it is a great party rock/hair metal/hard rock kind thing. I just can't help but find it a little sad that a band of middle aged guys sing about girls and sex so eagerly... (I have this problem with other bands as well... Big Cock!) If you are looking for a nice cd to pop in and do whatever you do, that requires no cranial commitment to listen to... this is for you. I think we need stuff like that sometimes.
