It’s hard to judge an album if you are prepared for something else than it turned out to be about. Not just if it’s good or bad, but style-wise. I thought that GF93 (and three other Italian records arriving at the same time) would be the domestic Italian power metal which we all know so well. Guess if I were surprised when I started “OSR” and all I heard was nu metal! But now I have told you and you don’t have to freak out. Since I really don’t favour the nu metal scene the whole thing became kind of silly, but I gave the record a try and found out that: Hey! This isn’t reallt that bad! To use my entire stack of comparison material I would say that GF93 sounds like a tougher Limp Bizkit, and since I seemed to be in the right mood, it worked quite well. Of course you get the characteristic guitar harmonies and melodies and mixed growl singing with talking (not rapping) and squeaking (not power metal castrato) singing. You might also call the music a kind of aggressive Nirvana blend. ”OSR” is the bands’ fourth release since it was formed in 1996. They started of somewhere in the darker corners of metal with influences from black metal and industrial ditto. With their second, more melodic album they got a little commersial break-through and have been played on several TV-stations and on radio. Before the third album three of the members left the band and entered three new which changed the sound till what we hear today. This is good. Not great, nor bad, and not enough interesting to listen to in the long run. Keep working guys!
