REVIEW: Gae Bolg & The Church Of Fand - Tintagel Dysphorie, 2003
8/10
Gae Bolg & The Church Of Fand - Tintagel - cover art ''Tintagel'' from Gae Bolg & The Church Of Fand, is the re-issue of the ultra limited vinyl-only release of the same name. The entire album has been specially re-recorded and as a result is rumored to have a much improved sound quality. This special CD edition includes 3 bonus tracks and comes in a 3 panel digi-pak. In Celtic mythology, Gaë Bolg was the foot-launched, belly-ripping, barbed spear given to the hero, Cuchulain, whilst Fand was the wife to the sea God, Manannan, and one of Cuchulain's lovers. Tintagel on the other hand, was a famous castle in the Middle Ages, now only a ruin, in Cornwall, where King Arthur lived according to the legend. It is the solo project of the Sol Invictus / Sieben / Seven Pines and L'Orchestre Noir trumpet player Eric Roger. Gaë Bolg And The Church Of Fand is a bizzare ensamble of medieval / folky / ambient & symphonic music and includes orchestral epics, powerful drum sounds, theatrical singing, flutes and trumpets. All the music is electronically reproduced with keyboards and samples but maintaings a very original feeling, I can tell you that. This is as bizarre and unique as it gets! It will take lots of time for you to get into these 10 tracks. If you manage to get into this at all that is!!! Which is also the case for the -bizarre- Seven Pines (Nympholept CD) release!
