REVIEW: Gaia Epicus - Satrap Sound Riot Records, 2003
7/10
Gaia Epicus - Satrap - cover art I had never heard about this Norwegian band until now but apparently they have been around for over a decade now. They have changed their name several times during these years and also gone from punk music through thrash metal and hard rock before ending up where they are today. This is far from what you are used to hearing from Norwegian bands. Instead of the good old black metal Gaia Epicus represent the power metal genre. In fact they sound very continental and I think that fans of Italian power metal bands will enjoy this debut album of their's. There are many instrumental sections in the songs with both heavy riffs, nice neo-classical melodies and also a fair share of guitar solos. It is not hard to tell that these guys are talented musicians and also pretty good song writers which is a combination that they should not be ashamed of. Like many other bands in their genre they try a little too hard though and sometimes the guitar solos in particular are a little annoying and interrupts the flow in the songs. Another thing is that I can't really make up my mind on whether I like the vocalist of the band or not. He reminds me a little of Fabio Lione at times but his voice is not as strong and he doesn't always sound the best. Gaia Epicus have still managed to produce a nice and enjoyable debut album that should be of interest to fans of power metal in general and the Italian school in particular.
