REVIEW: Gandalf - Rock Hell Wicked World, 2001
8/10
Gandalf - Rock Hell - cover art It´s nice to hear a new album that is not power metal or death metal which is not that usual these days... Gandalf is a Finnish band formed back in 1993 but they have had lots of trouble over the years with line-up changes and dubious record companies. This is their second album so far and they deliver a striking straight-forward kind of rock-n-roll death metal with heavy chugging guitars, beautiful melodies and growling vocals similar to the newer In Flames. This time the band decided not to care what people expected from them and instead create something that felt right and the result is three quarters of an hour full of untamed rocking power that will not leave you without a trace. Cross AC/DC and In Flames and you will get some kind of idea what to expect from Gandalf but have in mind that I really hate AC/DC (mostly due to the highly annoying vocals..) but still like this album! Gandalf breathes fresh air into the metal world and this album may well become one of the top 10 albums of 2001. Except for the music "Rock Hell" also contains the band´s first video clip ever for the track "Morning Sun".
