REVIEW: Gardenian - Soulburner Nuclear Blast, 1999
8.5/10
Gardenian - Soulburner - cover art In 1997 the debut album "Two Feet Stand" from the Swedish death metal band Gardenian was released through the small French label named Listenable Records, a release which was received very well by the metal magazines. Soon the band was noticed by Nuclear Blast and the band released this second opus called "Soulburner", a great album with a thick, heavy but still extremely melodic as Swedish death metal should be and also emotional to some extent with slower tunes here and there. The growling vocals are strong and energetic and supported by fine clean vocals from Artch´s Eric Hawk on six of the tracks which makes the album a whole lot better by creating effective musical contrasts that many bands could only dream of. There are a lot of melodic death metal bands erupting from the Swedish surface but Gardenian is definitely among the elite together with their likes In Flames and Dark Tranquillity. Considering that this album was recorded in only 19 days the quality of this release is remarkable and should not be capable of disappointing you even the slightest. The album was recorded at Studio Fredman in Stockholm.
