Fans of the Norwegian black metal pioneers Gehenna have had to wait four years for this album. During the time passed since the release of "Murder" the band has undergone a transformation. The death metal shell has been shed in favor of returning to their roots. "WW" is a raw, dark and primitive piece of black art, showing the world what Norwegian black metal from the early 90s would sound like with a 21st century production. Eerie and chilling, haunting and cold, Gehenna take us back in time to a day when black metal was not about gothic romances or symphonic arrangements but about creating a dark and somber atmosphere with simple means. The golden age may be gone but there are very few acts today who are able to picture the past in a contemporary frame with such a convincing and impressive result as Gehenna. This is a band that conforms to nothing but who are still not afraid of renewal. They follow their own path and they do it well.
Elements in their music reminds of Khold, Darkthrone and Satyricon and I believe fans of those bands should be happy about "WW". It is easy to complain about the length of the album but I personally prefer to have 35 minutes of pure quality instead of 20 minutes of filler material which is far too often the case with releases of today. Gehenna walk over landscapes shining with hues of red and black. The smell of sulphur burns in your nostrils and there is always a grim, necro feeling present in the horrible stench carried by the nespharious winds. The warmth and colors of spring are long since gone and the eternal winter rules with a ruthless iron hand.
Gehenna are no slaves to speed but have understood the need for variety, mostly settling with a mid-paced progression, lacking neither aggression nor groove. There is a reason why Gehenna are still alive and that reason will appear to you clearer than ever before while listening to "WW".
