REVIEW: Geoff Starr Rock n' Roll Band - Parafinns & Princesses Sew Knee Records, 2004
4/10
Geoff Starr Rock n' Roll Band - Parafinns & Princesses - cover art Have you heard of the London based punk rock band Sonic Boom Boys? Well, I haven't but this is at least a solo project from their frontman Geoff Starr who has decided to try his own wings and see if he can fly without his old band mates while they are on some kind of hiatus. This is a five-song EP which features a New York Dolls cover as a bonus track. Well, a bonus track is per definition something extra you get when you buy a special issue so I can't help but wonder what version of this EP does not contain the bonus track? Probably none but I guess calling it a bonus track makes it attract the attention of a few more people. Musically this EP is a straight-forward punk rock release influenced by bands like Ramones, Social Distortion and Hanoi Rocks. It offers simple riffs, only decent vocals and not a single memorable song. In short, there's nothing new or intrigueing to be discovered here, not even the New York Dolls cover manages to shed some light on Geoff Starr and his band. If you are a sucker for ordinary, common-place punk rock then by all means check out this band but I need more than this to be impressed today.
