Presented here is Hungary’s Gholgoth, signed to the French label Ordealis with their first full-length, entitled Somnus Mortis Imago. Gholgoth play a fast paced black metal reminiscent of Immortal’s earlier albums, but with better production, a touch of melody, and some breakdowns. Now, there are plenty of Immortal clones running around out there, so in order to separate themselves from the pack, a band would have to play this style with energy, originality, and strong musicianship. Does Gholgoth succeed? Yes, to some degree. There are enough interesting riffs and time changes, the musicianship is good, and the production is good. Despite being heavily influenced by Immortal, Gholgoth does not make the mistake of just simply blasting away at full speed, but manages to incorporate enough hooks and breakdowns for you to notice. Most of the vocal delivery is a black metal rasp, but there are sections later in the album that incorporate a death metal growl that should be used more liberally. There are some problems, however. The music does not come across as especially powerful and, consequently, does not really draw you in and hold your attention for very long. Most of the album suffers from too much similarity between the songs. The standout tracks manage to avoid this problem with the aforementioned hooks and breakdowns. The bad artwork showing a procession of the damned through some frozen waste is clichéd and pigeon holes the band as an Immortal clone. Still, there is a lot to like here if you enjoy this style, as I do, and I look forward to Gholgoth’s future releases and growth as a band. Standout tracks: Dead Star, Somnus Mortis Imago.
