REVIEW: Ghoul Cult - Ghoul Cult Faceless.Nameless.Shapeless, 2004
7.5/10
Ghoul Cult - Ghoul Cult - cover art The album starts with a definite groove laden riff that leads into old-school black/thrash metal in the vein of Celtic Frost, Possessed, and Bathory. The vocals are half spoken half growled and the other instruments involved definitely follow the old school somewhat minimalist mentality. Now don’t get me wrong the members of this band obviously have some skill with their respective instruments but it is somewhat masked by a poor quality “old school” production. Said production is my major issue with this particular album, it is most assuredly low in quality and makes all of the instruments sound too muddy. However aside from the muddy production all of the songs on the album are pretty damn good, they average about 5 minutes apiece and have a distinctly thrashy black metal element to them, and the groove from the very first track perpetuates itself throughout the entire album. To sum up this is a good album that suffers from poor production (even though I think that was the intention), and fans of old school Thrash, Death, or Black metal should definitely check this release out, quite enjoyable indeed. Song highlights include: Fucked by the Living Dead, Dirge for a Funeral Age, and Storming through the Bastions
