Burzum, Emperor, Kampfar and Windir are some of the countrymen who have inspired the two individuals behind the Norwegian band Gjenferdsel. There is a track called "1349" on this rehearsal demo but it has nothing to do with the band with the same name. Instead this was the year when the black death (a plague) reached Norway and these tracks are all held together by this lyrical concept. The lyrics are all in Norwegian to make the band seem even more "true" I suspect. I personally fancy lyrics written in a language that I can understand but I have come in contact with people from all around the world who appreciate the use of Norwegian lyrics in band lyrics even though they don't understand a word. That is obviously no major obstacle if you want to break through internationally as a black metal band. Gjenferdsel have some work to do before they reach that point though. There are some interesting ideas presented on this demo recording but they still lack any sense of originality and personality. Apart from this the sound quality also suffers from the fact that these six tracks were recorded at the band's rehearsal room. It needs to be emphasized that Gjenferdesel has only existed for two years and hopefully we'll hear more mature material from them in the future. Only worth looking into if you're a huge fan of old-school primitive black metal.
