REVIEW: Gloria Morti - Lifestream Corrosion World Chaos Production, 2004
9/10
Gloria Morti - Lifestream Corrosion - cover art Jeez, yet another quality metal band from Finland! What is going on up there?! For a country of only a few million people, the amount of quality metal per capita is currently the highest in the world. At any rate, this is my first exposure to Gloria Morti and, looking at the cover, I was expecting black metal with gothic influences. Not so! What we have here is a furious hybrid of thrash, black, and death metal played with precision and aggression. Three bands immediately come to mind when first hearing Gloria Morti: Dimmu Borgir, Crionics (the great blackened death metal band from Poland), and Astriaal from Australia. The symphonic black metal portions of the music (raspy primary vocals, keyboards and melodies) take more than a page from Dimmu Borgir, but the liberal use of death metal growls, down tuned guitars, and blast beats immediately bring to mind Crionics. The album’s excellent production exudes power, much like Astriaal’s brilliant Renascent Misanthropy. In addition to these influences, some Bay Area thrash riffing is spread throughout with some great hooks along with a few slow melodies that is not out of place at all. This is the band’s debut full length, on Firebox Records, but there’s no sign of any poorly written songs or amateurish playing. This is a monster from start to finish and will easily appeal to fans across the extreme genres. Fabulous!
