This album is what one would call a refresher course being that it is compiled from various releases from Gnostic throughout the years. The entire album is of the “Black Fucking War Metal” genre, I.E: extremely low production, shrieking vocals, somewhat monotonous fast drumming, and fairly nondescript “true black metal” guitar work. Now in this album there are positives and negatives, the negatives being that there is no audible bass sound in about 95% of the album, the shrieks are not of the best quality and at times border on yells rather than traditional black metal shrieking. The positives are in the fact that not a single member of this band gives a shit, they are quite simply playing a genre that they love, as loud as possible and having a hell of a time doing so and this reflects quite well in the music. I am usually a stickler when it comes to production value but in the “true” black metal scene production value is almost nonexistent, and while this didn’t give me the cold dark feeling of early Darkthrone or Immortal, it has it’s own distinct hate filled appeal. For the most part I have to say that I enjoyed this album quite a bit, I have been a fan of black metal for a while now and while I am usually more of a Scandinavian black metal type of guy this album was actually quite good, and (even though I am unsure if the members of this band intended for their music to have this effect) I actually had fun listening to this album. I would say any fan of low production “true black metal” or even the aforementioned “Black Fucking War Metal” ala Thornspawn, (ironically this band features several members of Thornspawn) should at the very least give this album a try, one because it is quite enjoyable and two who can resist a band where the lead singer’s acronym is Lord Magus Obliterater.
