REVIEW: Goathemy - Frostland Rebellion Bros Records, 2006
6.5/10
Goathemy - Frostland - cover art Goathemy are one of the many black metal bands which comprise the current scene and I am afraid to say that at least on Frostland they do not significantly differentiate themselves from their contemporaries in any noteworthy manner. The mood surrounding the album is quintessentially dark with many gloomy guitar passages including grim vocals and frequently fast drumming. The songs are varied and memorable enough that they hold your attention, however the mediocre production quality doesn't do Goathemy's sound any favors. One surprise for me was the audible bass lines in many of the songs as most black metal simply erases the bass in the overall mix. This inclusion produced an enjoyable element in many of the songs and on future releases I hope that they keep the bass in a similar capacity. The death strike for this album came in the vocal category. The grim vocalist performs his duties adequately for the genre but they also have a female singer who handles clean vocals. Unfortunately she does not display more than a modicum of talent and clearly does not yet have the chops for clean singing. This is not to say that she cannot improve her abilities but her current skill is not adequate and ends up significantly reducing the overall quality of the album. Goathemy are a band that I will keep in mind for their future releases as I can see that they clearly have latent abilities that may manifest with subsequent albums. However, Frostland is simply a small cut above average in the massive black metal scene.
