I’m not familiar with God Dethroned, or their past
releases, but “Into the Lungs of Hell” is a great introduction. The only
reason why I have listened to them is because I picked up a Canadian magazine,
which had a compilation CD included. God Dethroned’s “Enemy of the State” was
on this CD. I was hooked instantaneously. As soon as I saw “Into the Lungs of
Hell” I bought it. I can honestly say that I’m not disappointed either. It’s a
killer album of heavy/melodic death metal, with some grind thrown in. God
Dethroned doesn’t bring anything new into the world of metal with this release
(well, except for the album itself). What they do bring is an exceptionally
well written/played death metal recording. With a new drummer in Ariën van
Weesenbeek, whose performance is great. From what I’ve read, Tony Laureano
(Nile’s drummer) sat in for their previous effort "Ravenous", and the album
was extremely fast. This time around God Dethroned let their songs mature to
keep the listener interested, and to prove that they can play intelligent
music, and not just blast away. Although, they still use speed in area’s to
make the songs more aggressive and stronger. Most of the songs here are very
catchy and the guitar’s rhythm is the highlight. I have no problem listening
to this LP over and over again. Especially tracks like “Enemy of the State”,
“Soul Sweeper”, and “The Warcult”. The only problems that I have with this
album is: 1) I don’t like the song “The Tombstone”, not because of the music,
but because of the stupid lyrics. 2) Speaking of lyrics, it bothers me that
they reuse some of the same lyrics in “God’s of Terror“ as they used in “Soul
Sweeper“. I thought they were smarter than that. 3) I also think “Beef” is a
stupid name for the bass player, but that has nothing to do with the music
being played. God Dethroned write mostly about Satan and religion.
