REVIEW: Godgory - Way Beyond Nuclear Blast, 2001
7.5/10
Godgory - Way Beyond - cover art Placing a track named "Final Journey" first might seem slightly strange but the two-man band Godgory have always been a band following their own path no matter what everyone else thinks and they continue to do so. Pushing black metal over the edge is the motto of Godgory but the term black metal doesn't really do their very atmospheric way of playing justice. Obscure dark metal with a black melancholic touch might be a more adequate description. Whatever you choose to call their music they are one of the most interesting and unconventional bands to leave the frosty ground of Sweden. Their new album is no more conventional than their previous efforts and it shows both sides of Godgory. Sometimes the music is aggressive and powerful with black growling and then it falls into an almost ethereal state with spoken vocals. This duality is the driving force of the whole album that is rounded off with a great eerie track called "Holy War" which is more straight-forward and riff-based than most of the other songs. If you prefer atmosphere in front of speed then the new album from Godgory will satisfy your needs. Their music is very abstract and hard to grip but once you get into the right mood you learn how to appreciate the greatness of their compositions.
