Gods Of Fire is a young New York based quintet who have been drawing attention on the local live scene with costumes and a league of female dancers called the "Fire-ettes", including a full-time dominatrix and "software consultant" called Sacrelicia. This debut album of their's was produced by Wharton Tiers (Helmet, Biohazard, White Zombie) who discovered the band after their sold-out three-song demo cd from 2002. I don't know if it was Wharton himself or maybe the musicians should have sold their costumes or the female dancers to pay for a stronger production because everything except the vocals sounds muffled. It would be ok if they were going for an old-school 80s production in line with the early Metal Blade Recordings but this sounds like a poor modern recording instead.
A strong image and exciting stage presence does appeal to label representatives but there needs to be substance beneath it. Does the music itself surpass the image then? The simple answer is no. Gods Of Fire do have their moments of bliss but their traditional Manowar meets Helloween meets Judas Priest is far too traditional and there are unfortunately few interesting ideas of their own that are allowed to pierce through the anonymous sound carpet. This is a band that focuses mainly on creating an epic atmosphere, not exactly writing ballads only but most of the songs are slow to mid-paced so if you're into the modern play-as-fast-as-you-can bands you will not appreciate Gods Of Fire. Nonetheless, "Wrath Of The Gods" is a rather diverse album that takes us back twenty years in time to a day when good and memorable music could be created with simple means.
I am sure a lot of people will think that this is a band who lives in the past but like I've said many times before, good music never dies. Old-school heavy metal, not at its absolute best but enjoyable enough for a night out. If they play close to you I advice you to check them out. A stronger production would definitely help them push forward next time.
