Hate all things French but love Metal? You may have to change your mind about one of those assertions as France's greatest Metal import simply must be Gojira. Having flown largely under the radar for many years of the band's existence, From Mars to Sirius will surely land them more acclaim and attention on the world stage. On this album is displayed a masterful blend of technical Death Metal and whatever you want to call the style now popularized by Neurosis and borrowed heavily by many others (Mastodon, anyone?). If forced to make an erstwhile recipe for the sonic abuse that is unleashed here and now (2005 in non-U.S. territories) on Plainly put this is a massive album that marries the mechanical precision of Morbid Angel with the majestic fury of Neurosis. Watch out for the 'guest spots' from Zakk Wylde on "Ocean Planet" and "The Heaviest Matter of the Universe" (which sounds very much like a Yob song title). Not really, of course, but Zakk's favorite guitar squeal is present in spades on those two songs, almost becoming pretentious on the album opener. However, listening to this album as a whole, which is mandatory and most likely the band's intention, cleared up that issue. The record starts strong, gets stronger, and finishes in fine fashion. Prosthetic Records put a very pleasant surprise in my listening lineup and has gained Gojira at least one more fan. I hope some of youse guys out there give this band a chance and listen with open ears and an open mind. This record is infinitely better than the sum of its parts (i.e., the recipe) and will most definitely appear in my Top Ten List for 2006. Even with the sound of whales now and again....
