REVIEW: Golem - Death Never Dies Diamond Productions, 2003
6.5/10
Golem - Death Never Dies - cover art When Golem formed somewhere in Italy in April of 1999 they started playing Iron Maiden influenced heavy metal. Things were about to change though and as months and years passed their sound became more extreme when elements from melodic black / death metal was incorporated into their music. Brutal black / death vocals are coupled with death metal riffing and a powerful heavy metal touch is added through nice guitar melodies and well-placed solos. Shifting from pretty straight-forward sections to more complex and intense ones I am sure that most fans of metal will find something to enjoy here. Sometimes they sound somewhat like a less predictable and less symphonic version of today's Barathrum but you will not do Golem justice if you compare them to just one band. Touches of Iron Maiden are still present in their sound and some Swedish melodic death metal influences á la early In Flames can also be traced. The drum machine used sometimes sounds rather awful and the band need to improve their song writing skills but Golem is definitely a young band to look out for in the future if they continue to develop in this direction. Please note that this is a re-mastered version of the band's demo from 2002. Stand-out tracks: "Here Comes The Dark", "Something To Remind".
