REVIEW: Gorefest - La Muerte Nuclear Blast, 2005
7/10
Gorefest - La Muerte - cover art Gorefest has been releasing material since 1991. Their 1998 album “Chapter 13” was to be the last album they ever recorded. The band then split up after touring Chapter 13 throughout Europe….Eight year’s later Gorefest slams down one heavy death metal recording with “La Muerte”. They’re Back!! I’ve heard of Gorefest, but never listened to them. So when I saw the name in a list to review, I jumped on the chance to check them out. What a powerful way to start this album off with “For the Masses”. The band is tight after the long hiatus, and Jan-Chris de Koeijer has a harsh commanding vocal delivery that strips away through the constant death metal attack. His vocals are unique for death metal, where a lot of vocalists in this particular genre have a hard time separating them-selves from every other vocalist. The albums highlight is the opening track “For the Masses”. At the end of the song the rhythm section rips out a pit stomping thrash attack. Truly classic Death metal. It’d be hard for any band to follow up with something as great as “For the Masses”. After it’s done Gorefest seem to loose the high energy that was “For the Masses”. The rest of the album is good, but not great. It sort of evens out and sounds the same track after track. Although a notable performance goes to drummer Ed Warby, who wasted his kit in each song. “La Muerte” is a solid return to an over saturated genre of metal. While Gorefest haven’t released anything ground breaking in La Muerte; it’s great to have these veterans back ripping out the death styled tunes once again. “La Muerte” is an interesting album closer. While being an instrumental that clocks in near ten minutes long, it also brings the energy back that started the whole album off. Overall, Gorefest has shown that they still can play, but maybe should have sliced two or three songs off La Muerte. It’s too long...
