If the nearly wall-to-wall French singing and narration weren’t a concern, this might be the funniest – well, intentionally funniest – metal record I’ve ever heard. Gorg & Cie presents a mondo bizarro hybrid of pig grunts, fart noises, metal festival stage banter, children’s songs, samples from The Warriors, Running Wild, Frank Sinatra, White Lion, Sodom, “Fraggle Rock” and that horrible, horrible novelty dance hit “Dur dur d'être bébé” by that four-year old kid back in 1992, to name just a handful. I’m not sure if there’s a point to it all, nor if there needs to be one, because this is pretty friggin’ entertaining over the course of its entire 72-minute duration. The only major criticism – and you knew it would be forthcoming with ME as the reviewer – would be that the band’s original compositions are written not only as novelty, but as mere afterthought. Comedy grindcore at its best isn’t going to have artistic merit or emotional heft, and that’s all well and good, but here it’s essentially a buffer used sporadically amid the more ubiquitous comic vignettes. One sits there waiting for the interlude to end and the metal to begin, but it rarely does... kinda like the last Manowar album, no? So yeah, Welcome to the Nuts is worth a listen and a look (dig the album cover and CD booklet for more chuckles!) but don’t expect to hear much metal contained therein, even with severely diminished expectations.
