REVIEW: Gorgoroth - Twilight Of The Idols Nuclear Blast, 2003
6/10
Gorgoroth - Twilight Of The Idols - cover art Now that vocalist Gaahl finally was released from prison Gorgoroth took the chance to finish their new album "Twilight Of The Idols" which is the first release since the departure of their guitarist Tormentor. Black metal is something that I have never associated with the Nuclear Blast label but as soon as the genre was rising way above the underground (which is literally the place where black metal belong, isn't it?) they jumped on the bandwagon and signed bands like Gorgoroth and Dimmu Borgir. "Twilight Of The Idols" is the fifth full-length album from the Norwegians and it is perhaps the most varied and diverse release from them so far. The album starts off at a furious pace with the infernal track "Procreating Satan" which will probably appeal to those of you who enjoy your black metal fast, violent and aggressive. Then the pace is decreased and increased several times with both the faster, more aggressive side and the slower, doomier and more atmospheric side of Gorgoroth showing. The vocalist Gaahl may very well be violent in real life and be in possession of a grim and evil voice but he still depends on the rest of the band for making memorable music to go with his oral exertions. This is where Gorgoroth fail this time. The band members are certainly skilled musicians by now but there is not a single track on this album that really grips me except for "Blod Og Minne". It is violent, it is extreme and it is black but it is also unfortunately quite monotonous (in a bad way that is) and dull. Instead I advise you check out Orcustus, the new project including former guitarist Tormentor and current guitarist Infernus. At least there was something nice brought with this disc, I got to laugh a little while listening to the cheap sounding keyboard outro. It is a shame that the latin language should be used for something like that.
