Gorilla Monsoon deliver a solid platter of Sabbath style doom metal to the table on their second demo “Demonstrating Heaviness”. When I first heard the clever name of the band I immediately thought of the old WWF superstar/ personality. Is that what these guys had in mind with their band name? I can’t be sure about that, but I did come to find they hail from Dresden in Germany and deliver some heavy rocking that would make the old WWF champ proud. Without even hearing their music, and just taking a look at their demo title, its pretty clear what this band’s intention is — cranking up the volume. Heavy doom riffs with a rock and roll attitude are what this band is all about. The first track “My Way” starts off with nice little drumbeat before unleashing a super heavy riff, which really gathers some nice momentum throughout the song. The vocalist (who goes by the name of Jack Sabbath) comes in and shows a nice vocal range and ultimately his deep voice-singing style happens to suit this music quite well. The second song “Born to Lose” carries on in a similar manner, bringing some serious heavy groove mixed with a hard rock attitude. Motorhead definitely comes to mind here as Sabbath sings about drinking, dirty girls, and being shit outta luck. The final two songs, while coming in at a slower pace, show the band is capable of mixing things up a bit without sacrificing heaviness or intensity. The sound on the demo is definitely of the dirtiest type and fans of this genre should be pleased. While this disc does not offer a ton of variety or longevity, I presume that fans of bands such as Cathedral, Orange Goblin, and even Electric Wizard may find something to like here.
