Gorod was formerly known as Gorgasm in France but undoubtedly changed their name when making a splash across the pond so as to not be confused with the American band of the same name. Originating in 1997 but not releasing a record until 2005, Gorod is a Death Metal band very worthy of your attention. According to Willowtip Records honcho Jason Tipton, "If you want to hear slithery, arthritis-inducing riffs and spirally, harmony-rich arpeggios that truly rape the Rubix cube, ...France's Gorod is your culprit. ... This is extremely technical death metal at its absolute finest. For fans of Necrophagist, Meshuggah, The Dillinger Escape Plan." I discount the Dillinger Escape Plan comparison but agree that Gorod play Technical Death Metal, the likes of which will make your head spin. Gorguts would be a more apt likeness, but I digress.
Rather than reinvent the wheel I offer the bulk of the press release because it actually does an excellent job of capsulizing this band's latest effort, which is perhaps a testament to Willowtip Records. "With the follow up to Neurotripsicks, Gorod have once again hit the jackpot for the ultimate number-crunching spider-fingered death metal sweepstakes with Leading Vision, their sophomore effort for Willowtip. These Frenchmen have cleverly spiced their diamond-cutting technicality with supercharged pinball machine melodies and fluttering sting ray guitar solos against a backdrop of grooves and bonkers bass playing, not to mention tighter, radioactive songwriting sure to burrow its way into permanent memory. Considering how slippery and complicated Gorod sounds on paper, it's immediately refreshing to be reminded that death metal can be catchy, brainy, and fun all at the same time with Leading Vision. Sure to be one of the best technical death metal albums you've heard in quite some time."
I guess you'll have to call me a Francophile as I am a big fan of the latest efforts from Gojira, l'Esprit du Clan, and now Gorod, too. There is nothing to scoff at with Leading Vision because the musicianship is at an extremely high level for all parties involved. Of note is the bass work that recalls the masterful touch of Steve DiGiorgio. The main vocal style is quite familiar, hoarse but discernible, though I can't seem to place it at the moment. Maybe one of the Polish Death Metal groups? Once in a while Corpsegrinder is invoked and that's never a weakness in Death Metal. Also, a little bit of a Progressive vibe creeps in now and again, but this serves to make the album more interesting than it might have been otherwise. For you gender freaks out there, the drummer is a very able woman and she absolutely kills it on this record. This is a very solid effort that may very well creep into top ten album lists around the globe at year's end, and deservingly so. The band seems to have studied their Suffocation back catalog well.
